The old English idiom “at sixes and sevens” describes a state of confusion, disorder or uncertainty. That is roughly where email begins: messages arrive from every direction, pass through servers, queues and relays, and finally land where they belong.
The rest is internet culture. Six Seven is a number game, a running joke and intentionally meaningless. The coincidence was simply too good to ignore.
